How to estimate your sealant coverage

Before choosing and calculating the sealant, it is important to check the joint design and substrate at the construction site. It can be difficult to predict how much sealer will be needed for a construction job. Here is the below coverage estimate.

Best Practice for sealant calculation:

Sealant calculators are designed to determine the quantity of sealant required for a specific application, regardless of the sealant technology (silicone, urethane, hybrid, etc.) used. The calculations are based on the volume of a standard sealant bead, which is typically a rectangular prism that is then shaped into an hourglass configuration, a common design for basic vertical and horizontal expansion joints. These calculations utilize the recommended 2:1 width-to-depth ratio for the sealant bead. Sealant calculator will not be detailing or flashing applications. Parameter of rectangular sealant joint calculation

  • Length/Linear Feet/Linear Meters- Refer to the entire length of your joint/s, measured in feet or meters. This will be the largest of the numbers you enter.
  • Joint Width- The width, in inches or millimeters, indicates how far across your joint runs.
  • Joint Depth- The depth, in inches or millimeters, is measured from the top of your joint to the top of your backer rod or bond breaker.
  • Inefficiency Factor- The Inefficiency Factor, also known as "percent waste" or "wastage," is an approximate percentage of the sealant that will be lost during the product application process. This percentage can vary depending on the individual applicator and their skill level. To account for this, the following general range recommendations should be used when entering values into a calculator. If the experience level of the applicators is unknown, a safe estimate for the inefficiency factor would be 10-15%.
    • 20-25%- new applicators
    • 10-15%- average applicators
    • 0-5%- very experienced applicators

Volume = Width * Depth * Length

The above sealant calculator will provide an estimate of the number of tubes, cartridges, sausages, or buckets of product required for your specific application.

How to minimize Sealant Waste

First step to minimize the sealant based and unnecessary cost by estimating the required quantity of sealant required for your application.

The product's application instructions provide guidance on the necessary substrate preparation and the use of primer, if required. Following these instructions is crucial to prevent sealant waste due to lack of adhesion. To assess the adhesion of an existing joint seal, the field adhesion test can be performed. This test can reveal the quality of the application and identify potential issues, such as contaminated or expired sealant, improper cleaning, or extreme substrate movement.
